On Friday, September 1st we will have “Hats for Harvey” Day to raise money for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Your child may donate $1 to wear a hat all day. Since this is a fundraiser for disaster relief, students and families may donate more than $1. All money collected will be donated to the American Red Cross relief funds. Please make checks payable to Tritt Elementary. We will be writing one check to the American Red Cross. Thank you for your support!
On Friday we completed our Place Value STEM Challenge. Students worked in groups to design a free standing structure with the largest value using graham crackers for hundreds, pretzel sticks for tens, and marshmallows for ones. They had to use the 4 C's to collaborate, think critically, be creative, and to communicate.
Special thanks to our first Mystery Reader! Be sure to ask your child who surprised us on Friday. This Wednesday is Early Release. Students will be dismissed at 12:30. Please send in any transportation changes in writing. Here's what we're learning the week of August 28th: Math - Addition and Subtraction Strategies within 20 (Examples: Counting on, Making a 10) Reading - Story Problems & Solutions; Morals/Lessons of a story Language Arts - Irregular plural nouns; Phonics Unit 3 This week students will begin having weekly Spelling tests over the words from the Phonics unit. Students will copy these words in their agenda on Monday and practice these words during Language Arts throughout the week. Spelling tests will be on Fridays. Writing - Writing in complete sentences using correct capitalization & punctuation Science & Social Studies - Matter Changes (Solids melt, liquids freeze, and gases burn) Guidance- Lesson on Thursday with Mrs. Grindstaff STEM - Stuck Like Glue Challenge Upcoming Dates: August 30th Early Release @ 12:30 September 4th Labor Day - No School September 25th - 29th Fall Break - No School If you are checking your child out of school early on Monday and you have not already sent in a written note, would you please send a note in on Monday morning? On Fridays 2nd grade has morning run in the gym. Please have your child wear tennis shoes to school on Fridays so that they may participate.

(For example, in the number 195, there are 19 groups of 10.) Reading - Asking questions while reading; Retelling a story (Beginning, Middle, End) Language Arts - Adjectives; Long and short vowel sounds We will review nouns (proper and common) and verbs. Writing - Narratives (small moments) Science & Social Studies - Investigating the 3 States of Matter (solid, liquid, and gas) ILC - We will go to the ILC on Wednesday this week.
